the thing by jesus arroyo
"The Thing it is called,'' said Grandpa Christopher. Grandpa was old and sage (even though we didn't believe most of the stories he told us) he's still an awesome grandpa. He was explaining his encounter with The Thing in the lost woods when he went camping with his friends. He said," It was a typical day so we decided to go camping in the Lost Woods, but when we got there The Thing was right there when we saw it we ran. I was the fastest of my friends, so I was able to escape, but I saw all my friends get taken by the monster. My friends never were found that's why ever since that day I have never went to the woods even though the monster only comes out at night." He told this story every week to his niece which is my step sister and nephew (which is me) and my step sister's (Maria) friends (Larry, Bob, Freddy, and Penelope). This is what he told us every week, sure we got bored of it (but we weren't rude enough to tell him that). We were always looking for an adventure, so when he was done we went down stairs and ate. While we ate pepperoni pizza we thought about what day we should go camp to the woods and later when we were done eating we planned, without listening to grandpa, to go to the lost woods.
The next day we went to Angels Middle School. We told everybody about our plan to go to the woods everybody said that we were coco because like us they also knew about the monster, so none of them believed us, but then Maria said,'' Were going to the woods on Saturday no matter what anybody says!'' That was when everybody believed us. Charlie a queer kid told us if we can get him a souvenir from the monster, but we just laughed and walked away. People started to tell us to not to do. That it was practically committing suicide, but we were determined to camp on Saturday no matter what.
When school was done we got back to the house. We started to talk about going to the woods and Grandpa over heard our conversation and came in the room and said," You're not going to go the woods!" But grandpa," Maria said," No buts!" shouted grandpa and grandpa left the room angry like a bull getting taunted by the rodeo clowns. That didn't stop us because we were determined to go to the woods, so the next day we explained the whole plan to our friends, and the next day we were ready to go and camp in the Lost Woods. There was only one problem we didn't know if this plan was going to work.
The night of the next day we were ready to leave we planned to go to the Lost Woods, so we packed up and waited until our friends were outside and when they came we jumped from the windows and were on our way to the woods, until we took the first step on the damp floor of the woods. When we took the first step I knew we shouldn't be here so, I told everybody if they wanted to turn back but they said,'' No. ‘so because of peer pressure I continued walking. We walked for a couple of minutes until we heard weird noises something like a growl and then we turned around and there it was The Thing. It was like a giant, blue, boney with ugly eyes, bald head, and sharp edged teeth. It had a lot of scars on its back and a big scar going down the ugly face. The Thing reminded me of Medusa from the Greek myth except it didn't have the power to turn you into stone. In that that instant we all ran for our lives. The monster kept on running after us I thought about splitting up, but I wasn't going to leave my friends with the monster. We ran and then Freddy tripped on a rock and fell. We couldn't do anything, but watch Freddy in the darkness. That gave us a little bit of time to run. When we were running until we saw the first light of the town and when we turned around we saw no monster, so we slowed down (but that was a bad mistake). In a blink of an eye the monster tripped Maria and when the monster was ready to grab her, Bob hit it, but then the monster got Bob and took him to the dark woods. We tried to run, but then the monster tripped me and dragged me. When I was getting dragged something happened the monster stopped and ran. I was too weak to do anything, so I fell on the damp muddy floor.
I woke up the next day, and to my surprise I was in my house. Maria told me that they ran out the wood. She said they went to the police station and asked them to send a search party for us and luckily they found Bob and Freddy. It turned out they were able to run when the monster went back to get the rest of us, and of course they found me there on the muddy floor. When they were done explaining the story Grandpa walked in with an angry look on his face. He gave me a whole lecture that if it wasn't for my sister and Penelope we would of still been lost in The Lost Woods with a monster hunting us down. At the same time I don't know why I should thank my step sister if she was the one who dragged us into it. At that instant Grandpa told me that the monster never took his friends that it was just a lie to keep us away from the woods that didn't work. I got mad at grandpa and then realized it didn't matter if he lied he just wanted to protect us. After I apologized to grandpa I told him about what happened when the monster started dragging me. He said he ran because he leaves home at the first light of . At the dusk same time I don't know why he thanked my step sister when she was the one who got us into it. Grandpa told me that was similar to what happened to him and his friend. I was scared that whole month (and still am) and I even had night mares about it so our parents decided to move away from the Lost Woods. When we were leaving I looked to the woods and saw the terrible monster hiding in the trees looking straight at me with the monster's scar running down the monster's hideous face. I hesitated because I thought it was going to get me, so I ran back to the house and told Maria to come. When we got outside It wasn't there and she said,'' What?'' and I said, ‘Nothing,'' but in my head I knew it was there waiting for the monster's next victim. Ever since that day I never went to the woods and never would.
